OSAKA
Osaka is
undoubtedly one of Japan's hidden gems. It was once the imperial capital of
this country and at the same time a commercial center, and was also called (the
center of the nation) during the reign of Emperor Edo (1603 - 1868) when it was
the main trading place for rice. The city also witnessed the birth of the first
modern exchange market in the whole world.
The city was vulnerable to demise and was partially destroyed by
bombings during World War II but was quickly rebuilt with the stunning
architecture and attractive landscapes found in other Japanese cities such as
Tokyo or Kyoto. In 2018, Osaka had more than 11 million foreign tourists,
making it the second most visited city in the Land of the Sun after the
Japanese capital, Tokyo.
Reasons why this city is so famous these days
Gastronomy. This city is nicknamed Tenka no Daidokoro (Kitchen of the
Nation), because it was the hub of Japan's rice trade during the reign of
Emperor Edo. Nowadays it is famous as a paradise for gourmets from all over the
world. On every street corner, Osaka hosts at least one restaurant or food
stand serving something delicious. In addition, the city hosts more than 90
Michelin-starred restaurants, providing its guests with an abundance of
delicious and luxurious culinary offerings.
You should also try street food, as it is considered the best in the
area along the Dontori River. It is also famous for its okonomiyaki (a type of
pancake with meat, seafood or noodles) which is the most famous dish that you
can find in restaurants and on street food stalls. Other popular culinary
dishes include kitsune udon (noodle soup with tofu), hakozushi (sushi) and Takoyaki
(dough ball filled with octopus
meat).
To shop. Try not to spend too much if you visit Tokyo or Kyoto for the
first time, because Osaka is a true shopaholic's paradise. With prices much
lower than other major cities in Japan, you can find more souvenirs and local
goods. In addition, most stores have a “tax-free option” (8% discount) for
tourists, as long as they present their passport for the purchase.
From electronics you probably didn't know existed in the futuristic
Danden district (the city's electronic hub), to vintage goods and luxury stores
in Shinsaibashi, there's something to buy for everyone visiting Osaka.
Sightseeing. As one of Japan's metropolitan cities, Osaka is home to an
array of tourist attractions. We recommend visiting Osaka Castle first and
foremost. Located in the Chuo sector, the castle was built in the 16th century
and played an essential role in the political unification of the country.
You can also see the Umeda Sky Building, which shows how Osaka presented
itself at the beginning of the 20th century. This 173-meter-tall building has
40 floors and contains a rooftop observatory known as the Floating Garden.
Shitenno-ji Temple is another major tourist attraction in the city.
The list of attractions continues with the Osaka Kayukan Aquarium (one
of the largest aquariums in the world), the Tempozan Ferris Wheel, the
Tsutenkaku Tower, the Kobe Tower, the National Museum of Art (Kokuritsu Kokusai
Bejutsukan) and Universal Studios Japan.
April is the best time to visit Japan when the cherry blossoms. Dertour
invites you to discover this wonderful country within a unique circle, which
includes Tokyo, Hakone, Kamakura, Yokohama, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Nara and, of
course, Osaka.
